Each winter it seems that Maui gets at least one storm that causes significant flooding and leaking to houses, condominiums, and commercial properties. As both licensed general contractors and civil engineers, The Hawaii Inspection Group, Inc. has become a leader in the use of infrared cameras and moisture detection equipment to locate the source of water intrusion, assess the damage, and recommend needed repairs.
Since moisture is the number on cause of insurance claims and damage to structures in most buildings, finding the source of the water intrusion quickly is extremely important, but may be very difficult using traditional methods. We are able to detect the temperature cooling caused by evaporation, and thus shorten the time needed to locate and repair the problem. This is especially true if the threat of mold developing is present.
We can not only use infrared cameras to find the leaking, but are able to document our findings with digital pictures confirming the location of the problems. Digital photography is also very useful in establishing the primary cause of the problem, and the resulting liability.
Once the source of the problem is located, we can document the needed repairs that allow our clients to go to local contractors for competitive bidding to get the work accomplished. Often our clients have us inspect the work when it is completed to be sure it was done correctly. This documentation is extremely important if there are insurance claims involved.
If there is a possibility of mold from the water intrusion, we frequently are asked to perform mold sampling to be sure there is no mold contamination. If our sampling does show elevated mold levels, we can specify the remediation procedures needed to correct the problems.
